About this plant

Lacinato kale 'Black Magic' is a non-heading brassica prized for its deeply savoyed, dark blue-green leaves and sweet, tender flavor when harvested young. It is used raw in salads, massaged for slaws, or cooked in soups and sautés. Gardeners grow it for its cold hardiness, extended harvest window, and ornamental appeal in cool-season beds.

Germination

Kale seeds germinate best at soil temperatures of 50–70 °F, with emergence in 7–10 days. They do not require light to germinate but benefit from cool conditions; bottom heat above 75 °F may reduce germination. No pre-treatment is necessary.

How to plant

Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before your last spring frost or 8–10 weeks before your first fall frost, sowing at a depth of ¼ inch. Space seedlings 18–24 inches apart once transplanted outdoors. Direct sowing is possible in early spring or mid-summer for fall/winter harvest; thin seedlings to final spacing. Lacinato thrives in cool weather and often produces better leaves in fall than spring.

Growing tips

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture; kale benefits from deep, consistent watering but is relatively drought tolerant once established. Fertilize with balanced fertilizer at planting and again 4–6 weeks later, or side-dress with compost mid-season. Kale has few serious pests in cool weather, but watch for cabbage worms and flea beetles; row covers or organic sprays manage infestations. Yellowing lower leaves are natural and can be removed to improve air circulation.

Harvesting

Begin harvesting outer leaves once the plant is 12 inches tall; pinching off the top encourages bushier growth. Pick leaves early in the day for best texture and flavor, and harvest regularly to promote continued production. In Maryland zone 7, fall and winter plants often taste sweeter after a light frost. Leaves keep refrigerated in a plastic bag for up to two weeks; blanch and freeze for longer storage.
